an essay in progress....

i visited turkey last summer. my experience there led me to the insight that in the United States: cool is our culture. in contrast marshall mcluhan said that: culture is our business. jean baudrillard, in his book "America", claimed that america was a primitive culture. by saying this he meant to highlight that american culture is only 200 years old and has not slow build up of culture over thousands of years as in other parts of the world.

please note that i am not making value judgments in this essay. mcluhan, time and time again, urged against value judgments...as they hampered a deep understand of the current state of affaris.

in turkey, one thing i saw that was prevelant was culture. this country has been at the crossroads of east and west cultures for thousands of years, and it shows. the way people interact with one another, the style of living, the food, the architecture, etc. etc, 'culture' is almost oppressivley present.

what is culture? [define it here]

however, one thing is missing. and that is cool.

what is cool? [define it here] [a detachment, an apathy, an irony]

the clothes the 'hip' young people wear is not up to par in coolness level as america. they simply are not as cool and started to become apparant on my mind. i started to feel like a 'rock star'. i started to feel proud to be an american... to see their cute attempts to mimic our 'cool culture'...because i was the real deal cool american. it was inspiring to see our contribution to world culture in action.

i saw that my version of cool was well advanced from turks my same age. did i mention i was in turkey visiting my wife's family and friends? this gave me first hand access to the culture. my version of cool is to not try to be cool. this is the most advanced stage of cool. if i am going to a nice resturant i will wear the appropriate 'nice attire.' i noticed the turkish male we were dining with merely wore the same tshirt he had been wearing all day. a cool move, no doubt...but not as advanced as my move of changing into a nice shirt. right?

a turkish male was impressed after an interaction with me...saying: he talks just like someone on a sitcom. he was amazed that the 'cool' characters on TV were based on real life people. i could not be touched...for i was...cool.

the song should be rewritten to say: i'm proud to be an american, where atleast i know i'm cool

Awesome stuff!

On a side note, one thing the RnA Drops do is provide a great inner
strength / confidence. Not sure if you (Youngblood) are on the drops,
but it would definitely make you relaxed and more confident on stage.

If that (confidence) was an issue, it didn't come through in the clips.

The drops really do bring about this inner strength and equanimity,
though.

Just like the yo momma jokes, this material / angle is intellectual and
fresh. It's not your standard fare stand-up, and many folks may not
warm up to it, but I think it's great.

I've been to a couple of small comedy clubs out here (No. VA / DC area)
and there were a couple of acts that were your more highbrow fare
(like yours) that added new layers to the form.

So many stand-up comedians go for the blue or cheap laughs - there's
nothing wrong with that, but the stuff you're doing is more a rarity in
the field.

I remember your conversation with Bob, and I think Lenny Bruce was
mentioned (i.e.., a sort of arty, intellectual blending of forms). Like
Bob reading poetry from a dollar bill while doing pushups over it.

Your stand-up comes off this way: a sort of fresh exploration, keeping
the form enough to remain viable for that medium. It's a nice balancing
act. Nicely done.

I can see the germ of something interesting taking shape you feel your
way through this; as you fine tune your expression here.

I'm a little envious, because it's a form of interaction I considered a few
years ago, but sort of talked myself out of it.

I'm sure everyone has advice, but I would quote iON and say, "You never
get it wrong and you never get it done."

I would see it as a process / exploration, which I'm sure you do, where
there is no valuation / gauge of yourself or the material determined by
each appearance.

Each appearance can be seen as a part of a larger process of interaction
and mutual exploration.

I really admire what you're doing. You're getting audiences to fire up
synapses that may not have otherwise been fired.

I'm very interested to watch this all unfold.

Implications of the NBA riot
I'm sure almost everyone has heard about the riot that occurred last year at the Pacers and Pistons game. This event has been referred to as the "ugliest incident" in NBA history and some are even suggesting the incident is a sign of the very end of U.S. society itself. However, I don't believe the riot was all-that-bad in comparison to similar events that have occurred around the globe. Shoot, considering the now ubiquitous international soccer riots, by international standards this riot was a non-event. The fact we don't kill each other over sports (that much at least) is just one reason I think the U.S. really is the best country in the world. Other reasons being: movies with big explosions and free market capitalism. What has most concerned me about this incident is not the actual riot itself, but people's comments about the riot. The comments I’m specifically referring to are by people who are defending the players that physically assaulted fans.
These comments can be summed up as follows: the players were protecting themselves by preemptively attacking fans who might throw more dangers items in the future (hmm, that argument sounds familiar). The players were protecting their honor (as if the 6 million a year doesn't do that enough). The fans, referees, lack of security, and the PA announcer (yep, I actually saw this one) are to blame. It’s OK because I would have done the same thing. These comments concern me because I feel it is obvious the attacking players are the individuals ultimately to blame for the riot.
Bill Conlin, of the Philadelphia Daily News said: "The NBA brawl is...a big festering flashpoint that will distract our attention from a much bigger and uglier picture of ourselves." I disagree with Conlin because I believe sports are a microcosm for the society as a whole, and as a result the NBA brawl is a very accurate snap shot of our overall society. I contend that if one really wants to pay attention to a picture of our overall society, then analysis of this event and specifically the comments about it is a very good place to start.
What do these comments say about our society? Perhaps they suggest we have the tendency to shift blame to irrelevant matters instead of facing the real problems of a particular issue. Or perhaps they suggest we have an unwillingness to see fault in our leaders and heroes. I'll be the first to admit that I have no idea what these comments say about our society, but to me they sure are unsettling.

ill write more about this later, but for starters...i tried to frequent
a tradational male american barber, something i had abboned in my
youth when my mom started taking me to the hair salon. but i have
since decided to ditch the barber for good (unless i need a shave),
and instead go to a tradational hair saloon with women.

why?

b/c damn, it just feels better! getting your hair cut is a sensual
thing (like a message or s.thing) and it just feels all weird for a guy
to do it. (for some reason it would feel better for a gay male to do
it) and im not going to lie, i kind of get my jollies w/ a attarative
female touching on my hair and what not.

check this site out, there was recently an article about it in
the U. of West Ga. alumni mag a/o this place.

it was something of a hippie-commune in the early 70s.

from what ive been told, u. of west ga was a real crazy party and
hip party school in the 60s, 70s, and 80s....that was no where to be found when i got there...

i got my MA in the psych. dept., the only one of its kind on the
east coast.

the atl...then the mayor made the cops withdrawl the charge...

the southern baptists claimed the show was the evidence that
atlanta had become sodom and gomorah (sp?) and naked boys
singing was the work of the devil himself...

after seeing the show, i have to say that if naked boys singing
is the work of satan, then satan is a wussy ass fallen angel who
really likes show tunes!

i would figure satan would manifest his musical evil in a manner
more like marlyn mansion, as opposed to Oklohama! or the
Sound of Music.

email service and the only way you can get it is if somebody else
has it.

they send you a link from their gmail service and you can then
send it to 5 other individuals in the same manner, and so it has
spread accross the globe in this manner similar to the way the
clap is spread!

they are doing it like this b/c the service is still in 'beta'.

...so anyways, you can tell all the cool net kids from the uncool
ones from whether they have a gmail address.
